Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful through her mother. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was in her university. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
